I'm not a big fan of electronic music. On my Ipod I don't think I have nothing else than rock, Latin-Cuban music, oldies and the odd folk or country song. Throw in a dash of Pop if you want. I work out to The Killers and I have no interest whatsoever in drugs, so why do I want to go to an after hour?
You will realize in this blog that the latest trend in my life is to follow. I still won't follow you do anything illegal, so don't ask. I mean, follow in the sense of discovering what other people around me enjoy.
Nik, my BBE (Best Boyfriend Ever) loves electronic music. He could listen to Bob Sinclair and then continue with some obscure beat only people wearing silver spandex would know about. He likes, old techno and new electronica and he has no idea why he has never been to an after hour before, it is one of the thing He want's to do.
Poor Nik learned to play his music when I'm out of the house. He could only take so much "bebe, can you change the music? It gives me headaches and makes me want to pull my hair" followed by an eye roll. And I'm not lying, lounge music, I can take, but whenever there is a continuous beat that keeps going, and the dj keeps adding, and it goes faster, and now they add the voice of a pseudo barbie in heat, I just can't stand it. It stresses me out too much.
On the flip side, I like dancing. Any excuse to stretch out these old limbs of mine is a good one. I'll just tune out, or maybe I'll listen to something new that will make me change my mind, who knows?
Also, I'm getting old. I remember when I was 17 (let's say 18 for legal purposes), I used to go out with my friend Lore and my sister Caro and we would be in line at the club at 9pm, yes, 9pm, and we would stop dancing or leave until they kicked us out of the establishment at around 3:30 am, then we would reach home until whenever, and that with nothing but orange juice and water in our system. The memories. Now, my 25 year old ego is telling me I need to do this. Dancing until 7 am? Sure I can! it might take a couple of Redbulls and will probably result in permanent brain damage, but I have something to prove.
Since Nik has always wanted to do this, and I'm on this journey to try new stuff I thought to make it a joint venture, after all people have to learn and share interests. He is taking salsa lessons after all, I think I can throw him a bone and spend a sleepless Saturday night. It's not like I have any other plans.
This is something I want to do, yet I'm mighty afraid of what I'll encounter. My friend Kate was a regular at after hour clubs, so at least, now I'm sure they won't be all wearing belly shirts and pony tails. If I go I'll go with Nik and will drink nothing but energy drinks or water so I won't be in danger of becoming a drugged mess and will probably reach home safely. I would have done something to make BBE happy and I'll have the dancing bug out of my sytem. Win-win situation, except for the sleep deprivation. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.
Now I'm kind of looking forward, maybe they will play some tectonik!
Well, you can CHECK going to an afterhours. It was a bit strange if you ask me...Too many gay men on steroids without shirts on. I was a bit scared.Anyways, at least we can say we did it!!!
ReplyDeleteToo bad we didn't go together to the Psychedelic Artshow here in Montreal.
ReplyDeleteEven as always sober myself, I like the ambiance of the other people actively stoned so I don't feel threaten by their judgement when I let go of the crazy in me.
The Psychedelic music that I heard is of much better quality than the other electronic music I've heard.
My roommate is a Psychedelic DJ, and it is pretty technical as well.
So, some raves have very cheap monotonous techno music and the Psychedelic parties were I've been such as this http://www.myspace.com/montrealvisionaryartshow , were richer musically
I see a big difference when there is less alcohol.
ReplyDeleteI haven't gone to the after hours. Just to long (hippie)parties until 10 a.m. where there is no alcohol or where there is very little but more psychedelic potions (most of them still legal).
